EduCity Duathlon 2019 that was held on 23rd February 2019 had set a new standard as it received participation from 365 athletes from eleven (11) countries, doubled from last year where it received participation only from five (5) countries. Even though the athletes are still predominantly Malaysian, 2019 sees some new contenders coming all the way from Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Great Britain, Indonesia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, USA and Uzbekistan. The event was graced by YB Md Khuzzan Abu Bakar, Johor’s EXCO for Youth, Sport and Heritage together with Puan Hajah Zihan Ismail, Director Tourism Johor representing YB Liow Cai Tung, Johor’s EXCO for Women’s Development and Tourism and Mr. Sugu Maran Kailasan, Managing Director of Iskandar Development Management Services Sdn Bhd representing EduCity.

At 7:00am, the competition was kicked off with the endurance category where the athletes started with the 10km sprint, 60km by bike ending with a final 10km sprint. Under the sprint category, athletes were challenged with a 5km sprint, 30km by bike ending with a final 5km sprint. The scenic route was strategically planned within the city of Iskandar Puteri city where it ends at EduCity Sports Complex.

YB Md Khuzzan commented on EduCity Sports Complex being one of Johor’s pride. “We have seen numerous events from various sports segments and this contributes to the local scene where I can confidently say almost every weekend, a sporting event is being held in Johor. This creates the community that we want, active and health conscious! Being a city that is famous for hosting extreme sports, I also look forward to Iskandar Investment Bhd inaugural ‘Iskandar Investment Esports Carnival’ where it will be one of Malaysia’s biggest Esports events with Johor owning the bragging rights as the host of the event. This creates a beautiful ecosystem with the different kind of offerings within the sports industry that is unique in its own way,” he said further.

Puan Hajah Zihan added on to that statement from a tourism point of view that the results based on the number of countries that participated were already a testament that Sports Tourism is a strong pulling factor for the city. “We are proud to see the numbers of participants in EduCity Duathlon 2019 as we need more events to continuously promote Johor as a destination for sports tourism with excellent international standard facilities. With Visit Johor taking place in the year 2020, we would like to work closely with EduCity to maximize the awareness level of events held in the sports complex to the local and international market,” she said after the prize giving ceremony ends.

Another event that will be the highlight for the month of March is Iskandar Investment Bhd inaugural ‘Iskandar Investment Esports Carnival’. This two-day Esports carnival is envisioned to be one of Malaysia’s biggest Esports events and will be held in EduCity Sports Complex.
